*Abbreviations used* ch = chain stitch dc = double crochet (UK: treble) hdc = half double crochet (UK: half-treble) RS = Right Side sc = single crochet (UK: double crochet) ss = slip stitch Foundation: Make slip knot with lighter yarn (we'll call it "Color A") and place loop on crochet hook. Chain 6.
Row 1 (see image #1 at left): Two dc in two loops of the 5th ch from hook, dc in last ch, ch 3, turn. Note: turning ch-3 always counts as first dc of next row. Row 2 (see image #2 at left): Skip first dc, 2 dc in space between the dc pair, dc in last dc (i.e. in top of the ch-3), ch 3, turn. Rows 3–9: Repeat Row 2. Resulting strip should measure 4" to 4.25" (10 to 10.8 cm), after blocking. Just dampen, stretch evenly in all directions and let dry flat. Mine gains in length a bit when I do this. Add or subtract a row if needed, or use a different hook or yarn thickness to achieve this measurement. Then fasten off. For a belt or headband, add more rows until strip measures about two-thirds of the total length you wish your finished belt or headband to be.
For the rainbow version, I fastened off at the end of each row and attached a new color at the beginning of each new row. During the next Step, when I added the black border, I simply crocheted over the ends and trimmed them instead of weaving them all in. For the grey and tan one I did two rows of the same color before fastening off. I created a kit for making 6-8 of these in all 20 shades of the DesigningVashti Lotus yarn pictured. I recently added it to my website.
Time to add a contrasting border to the V-stitch strip! Attach the darker yarn—let's call it Color B—with a sc in the lower right corner of strip, into the space between the last 2 stitches of Row 1. You'll be crocheting along the long side. The green arrow indicates where to start this round. Add 1 more sc in the same corner space, *3 sc in next space along the long side of strip, repeat from * to next corner. Four sc in the corner space, 2 sc in the space between the dc-pair of the short edge, 4 sc in the next corner space, repeat from * to * to edge the second long edge like the first, 5 sc in the next corner space, 3 sc in the last corner space, slip stitch in the starting slip stitch. (Do not fasten off.)
Now crochet in rows to create the band: Chain 2, turn. Row 1 of Band: Hdc in each of the next 6 sc, ch 2, turn. Row 2 (RS): Hdc in first hdc, hdc in each of next 5 hdc, ch 2, turn. Rows 3–5: Repeat Row 2. Row 6 (Make button loop): Hdc in first hdc, hdc in each of next 2 hdc, ch 12 tightly, hdc in each remaining hdc, ch 2, turn: 6 hdc. Row 7: Repeat Row 2, keeping ch-12 loop to the back of the row as you crochet in each hdc.
Row 8 (Make button): Hdc in first hdc, hdc in each of next 2 hdc, ch 4, *yo and insert hook under two loops of the 2nd ch from your hook, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on hook, repeat from * 3 more times in same ch, insert hook in same ch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through all 6 loops on hook tightly to form a ball shape, ss tightly around the 2 chs at base of ball, ch 1 tightly, ss in side of last hdc made, hdc in each remaining 3 hdc of row, ch 1, turn. Row 9: Repeat Row 2, keeping button to the back of the row as you crochet in each hdc. Ch 1 to turn instead of ch 2. Row 10: Skip first hdc, sc in each of next 3 hdc, skip next hdc, ss in last hdc. Fasten off and weave in ends. Block (dampen, gently stretch and press evenly with fingers on a flat surface and let dry completely.
