This is one of my absolute FAV upcycling projects when it comes to getting crafty and upcycling ‘junk’… Wine corks are fun to reuse and restyle. You can follow this tutorial to make earrings, pendants or even decorative buttons.
This is one of my absolute FAV upcycling projects when it comes to getting crafty and upcycling ‘junk’… Wine corks are fun to reuse and restyle. You can follow this tutorial to make earrings, pendants or even decorative buttons.
First step is slicing the wine corks into thinner rounds. The rounds should be approximately 3/4″ deep. Note: you can use an X-Acto knife or a hand saw for the cutting. If possible use a vice to ensure consistency in cuts and safety.
Once sliced, trim the edges.
Pick your paper. I find origami paper the perfect combo for this project.
Add Mod Podge to one side of the wine cork round. Don't add too much or it'll seep onto the side of the wine cork round.
Place the glued side of the wine cork round on the back of the paper. Smooth the paper into the surface to remove any folds or bubbles that will show up once the glue dries.
Once the glue is dry use your scissors to remove the excess paper. If need be you can keep trim the edges as needed.
Feel free to add a coat of Mod Podge to the paper. Allow to dry. This next step is optional. Add 2-3 coats of wood varnish to the paper side of the wine cork round. Allow to dry in-between coats. This creates a resin type finish. The wood varnish also gives depth to the design of the origami paper.
Also I found it easier to create a bunch of these at a time.
Once the wood varnish is dry you can now screw in the eyelets. For earrings, add the eyelets to the side of the wine cork rounds. For decorative buttons, add the eyelets to the back of the wine cork rounds.
For earring add a jump ring to the screw-in eyelet then add your earring hook. Now you're done!
You can easily create pendants to go with your earrings. Be warned - this is a very addictive DIY.
