First, find a sweater, wash in hot water, and tumble dry. This way you know it's not going to shrink! Cut the sleeves off.
Cut the sleeves open on the inside seam.

Now you're going to cut out the hood.
Ok, so this may sound wrong, but you're going to sew it together wrong sides facing. Just trust me here. Zig zag as close to the edge as you can.
Then turn it right sides facing and sew again, using a 1/2" seam allowance to make sure none of the first seam shows through. This is a french seam. It will keep your cocoon from unraveling.
Repeat steps 5 and 6 with the hood pieces, stopping 5 inches from the bottom.
Pin the hood inside the cocoon with the wrong side of the hood facing the wrong side of the cocoon. Zig Zag.
Fold over and sew again, forming a french seam.
Decorate!
