This tutorial will show you how to create an oversized flower brooch from an unwanted / thrifted necktie that you can wear on a dress, the lapel of a jacket, or to decorate your bag with.

You Will Need (6 things)

  • Necktie
  • Needle
  • Matching Thread
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Brooch Pin

Steps (10 steps, 30 minutes)

  1. 1

First find an appropriate necktie for your project. I found this Givenchy tie from an op shop (Australian thrift store) for $1, that happens to be in one of my favourite colours.

  2. 2

    Gather your materials together

  3. 3

Remove inner lining of necktie. To do this, either use a seam ripper or scissors to cut open the thread that holds the necktie together at the back.

  4. 4

Your necktie is open and you can see its lining

  5. 5

Once you've opened your necktie, and removed its lining this is what you will get - keep it to one side, don't throw out

  6. 6

Not it is time to create your flower. Hold your necktie and start by folding around in a circle, begin with the larger end first. Pins might help you here to hold in place as you fold. Use your needle and matching thread (or 'invisible' thread), and sew by hand and hold in place.

Continue folding and hand sewing in a circle, each layer on top of the the previous, which should be placed slightly in from the edge of the last layer.

  7. 7

Almost complete. Now if you'd like to finish your necktie brooch with a decorative button in the centre this finishes off your flower brooch nicely.

  8. 8

Now to finish, using your discarded necktie lining, cut two circles smaller than the size of your brooch - these will act as your brooch backing before you attach your pin. You don't have to do this, but I find it covers untidy stitches at the back.

  9. 9

Then, you add your pin. I purchase brooch backs in bulk from etsy you could also use a large safety pin. I used a glue gun to attach both the backing circles and brooch back pin to the rear.

  10. 10

Your necktie flower brooch is ready to wear!
