This uncomplicated bag is gratifying to sew. It makes a great carry all or quick last minute gift. You will need a yard of fabric, matching or contrasting thread, measuring tape, interfacing (optional), scissors and a sewing machine.
This uncomplicated bag is gratifying to sew. It makes a great carry all or quick last minute gift. You will need a yard of fabric, matching or contrasting thread, measuring tape, interfacing (optional), scissors and a sewing machine.
Fold a yard of twill fabric with selvage ends together and cut out a 45cm x 50cm rectangle. Then cut a 9 cm strip from the fold to the edge.
Fold the 50cm wide side wrong sides together 1 inch. Press. Fold over again 1 inch. Press. Straight stitch each edge.
Cut the 9cm strip into 2 pieces. Each 9cm x 56 cm. Fuse a 3cm x 52 cm strip of interfacing to each. fold a 1 cm edge on each side of strip and press wrong sides together. Then press the strip in half with the 1 cm folds inside.
Straight stitch each edge of the straps. I used a twin needle. Then finish the ends by folding a 1 cm edge turn and turn again. Straight stitch each end.
With bag wrong side out. Pin the straps 15cm from each side. Stitch the straps in place using a box stitch with and x. Pivot the bag to make the box and X.
Stitch side seams right sides together 3 times. Seam 1.5 cm from edge, 1 cm from edge and then seam an over edge stitch (zigzag stitch). Fold the bag in a diamond shape with the side seams centered.
Measure 8 cm from the point and mark each seam across. Should be about 15 cm across. Straight stitch and then over edge both sides. Carefully cut the points off.
Turn the bag right side out and pin the corners. Measure 8-9 cm following the seam you just made on the bottom of the bag as a guide and mark both sides.
Straight stitch down all four sides using a 1 mm seam allowance. Trim threads.
