A tutorial to turn a turtle neck sweater into a winter skirt, coupled with matching legwarmers made from the sweater's cut away sleeves.
Find yourself an appropriate turtleneck sweater, I found mine in an op shop (Australian thrift store) for a few dollars.
Cut away your sleeves and turtleneck with sharp scissors. The bottom of your sweater will become the bottom of your skirt so that it is already hemmed and ready to wear.
Sew the body of your cut away sweater shut, good sides facing each other. I have an overlocker sewing machine and found serging the sides together easy to do, although you could just use an ordinary sewing machine, with a straight stitch followed by zig-zag stitch to finish it off. You don't need to do much with your sleeves other than cut a straight line at the top and serge or zig-zag stich your hem. These become your legwarmers. Next, serge or zig-zag stitch the top of your skirt, then fold down by a few inches and sew a casing of a few inches, leaving a gap to thread your elastic through. Do the same elastic casing with you legwarmers. Cut your elastic to approximately 1.5x the width of one side of your skirt, and the same for the top width of your leg warmers. Thread your elastic through and sew your loop closed.
Turn your skirt the right way and it is complete and ready to wear.
Do the same for your leg warmers, now ready to wear.
