I got a custom order for a newborn photo shoot. A friend asked me if I could make a turtle shell and cap outfit. I looked into it and most of the patterns are paid.
I come across this great one at Hodge Podge for free, however! It was perfect! She links to several pages where you can learn the techniques of the turtle shell pieces.
She linked to a front post/back post video and a pentagon granny square tutorial. I amended the original tutorial a bit using that technique (she uses the hexagon) as well as outlining the shell a little more. Other than that, it's pretty much just a lot of repetitive stitch techniques and whatnot.
I used Lion Brand's Vanna's Choice in Dusty Green and Chocolate. I worked throughout with a size G crochet hook.
It was definitely a fun, but challenging, project! She said she's going to want a lady bug at some point, so I suppose I'll be doing that next!
