Whilst out and about keep yourself nice and warm by wearing this fashionable trapper hat. Practical yet stylish, the hat has shaped earflaps and is lined with a layer of fur fabric to ensure the cold weather is kept at bay. Although this may appear a slightly complicated design, the making is actually split into different stages to prevent it being a daunting process. The earflaps and peak of the hat are knitted first then worked together with the crown. Size To fit medium sized adult head Materials 2 x 50g balls of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran in ruby Pair of 5mm ( US 8 ) knitting needles Approximately 51 x 84cm ( 18 x 33in ) piece of black fur fabric for lining Tension 18 sts and 24 rows to 10cm ( 4in ) square over st st using 5mm ( US 8 ) needles.

Instructions

  1. EarFlaps ( make 2 ) With 5mm ( US 8 ) needles, cast on 10 sts. Beg with a k row, work in st st and inc one st at each end of 
2nd row and foll 5 rows. 22 sts. Work a further 19 rows without shaping. Leave sts on a holder. Peak With 5mm ( US 8 ) needles, cast on 26 sts. Beg with a k row, work in st st and inc one st at each end of 
2nd row and foll 6 rows. 40 sts. Work a further 11 rows without shaping. Leave sts on a holder. Crown With 5mm ( US 8 ) needles, cast on 8 sts, then k across 22 sts of left earflap, cast on 5 sts, k across 40 sts of peak, cast on 5 sts, 
k across 22 sts of right earflap, cast on 8 sts. 110 sts. Beg with a p row, work 4 rows in st st. Next row ( wrong side ) K to end. Now work in patt as follows: 1st row K3, [p1, k5] to last 5 sts, p1, k4. 2nd row P3, [k1, p1, k1, p3] to last 5 sts, k1, p1, k1, p2. 3rd row K1, [p1, k3, p1, k1] to last st, p1. 4th row K2, [p5, k1] to end. 5th row As 3rd row. 6th row As 2nd row. These 6 rows form the patt and are repeated. Patt a further 18 rows. 25th row ( right side ) K3, [p1, k1, k2tog, k2] to last 5 sts, p1, k1, k2tog, k1. 92 sts Next row K to end. Dec row K1, [k4, k2tog] to last st, k1. 77 sts. Next row P to end. Dec row K1, [k3, k2tog] to last st, k1. 62 sts. Next row P to end. Dec row K1, [k2, k2tog] to last st, k1. 47 sts. Next row P to end. Dec row K1, [k1, k2tog] to last st, k1. 32 sts. Next row P to end. Dec row K1, [k2tog] to last st, k1. 17 sts. Dec row P2, [p2tog] to last st, p1. 10 sts. Break yarn, thread end through rem sts, pull up and secure. To line and Make Up Lay the knitted piece onto the fur fabric lining and cut around the edge, adding 5mm ( 3/8in ) all around. Make darts to shape the top of the fabric to mimic the crown of the hat and trim away the excess. Taking a whole stitch at each side into the seam, join the back seam of the knitted piece. Make 2 twisted cords 27cm ( 10 1/2 in ) long, attach one to the edge of each earflap. With right sides together, join the back seam of the lining taking a 5mm ( 3/8in ) seam allowance, then turn lining to right side, insert into the hat and folding approximately 5mm ( 3/8in ) of lining onto the wrong side, slipstitch all around the edges of the hat, earflaps and peak.
