Traditionally when a new baby was born in Cumberland visitors would be given oatcakes with rum butter. In return the visitors would leave a silver coin. On the day of the baby's christening all the silver coins would be put in the empty butter bowl. A sticky bowl full of coins meant the child would never be wanting. Rum butter is still good with oatcakes but also with scones, teabread, Christmas pudding and mince pies! It is lightly spiced which makes it a great festive present.
