Quick Pattern Written in Plain English

This was the best scarf tutorial I could find on youtube.com but I didn't think that my mom and sister would like "infinity scarfs" like the lady makes in the video. So I changed the pattern a little bit. This is also the the very first scarf I have ever crocheted, literally, ever. I wanted to share my version of this pattern, but I am super new to crocheting, and don't really understand all the lingo. So I wrote it how I would be able to read and understand it as a newbie. If this is terrible, I'm sorry, lol. I hope it makes sense :) Let me know if you have questions! Enjoy <3

Description

This was the best scarf tutorial I could find on youtube.com but I didn't think that my mom and sister would like "infinity scarfs" like the lady makes in the video. So I changed the pattern a little bit. This is also the the very first scarf I have ever crocheted, literally, ever. I wanted to share my version of this pattern, but I am super new to crocheting, and don't really understand all the lingo. So I wrote it how I would be able to read and understand it as a newbie. If this is terrible, I'm sorry, lol. I hope it makes sense :) Let me know if you have questions! Enjoy <3

Instructions

For my scarfs I only used one package of yarn per scarf. And they ended up being about 4-4.5 feet long. Which is a pretty good length, and they stretch a lot too. I also used a 5.5mm hook. Also called an "I" or #9 My yarn is just a medium weight that was 6oz or 315 yards.

  2. Small img 0225 1320884645

Do your starting slip knot. Chain 32 (I know it sounds like a lot, but it will shrink about 1/4 the size) Then do a Double Crochet in the 2nd stitch from the end. Continue on doing a Double Crochet in every Other stitch. When you get to the end, Chain 2 and the turn it. Now the row you just made, makes the piece look like a sideways ladder. With the Double Crochets being the "rungs" in the ladder. Picture it like this, because its the best way I can think to describe it, lol.

So now you'll be starting 3rd row. It gets a little crazy, because you wont be working in stitches but in the holes between the stitches. You'll be alternating from stitching from the front, then from the back, then from the front, then from the back... You get the idea :) Ok so the last thing you did was Chain 2 and turn it. Now yarn over, and work a Double Crochet around the front of the 2nd "rung" in the ladder. (So again, yarn over, bring your hook into the first hole, go behind the "rung" and poke it out through the 2nd hole, yarn over, pull the yarn back through 2 loops on your hook, then yarn over and pull the yarn through the last loops on your hook.)

  4. Small img 0225 1320885787

Now you want to do the same kind of stitch, but working around the back of the next "rung". (So again, yarn over, bring your hook into the second by coming from the back of the stitch and over the "rung" and then back out the back through the 3rd hole. Yarn over, and pull the yarn through the first 2 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull though the last 2 loops on your hook.)

  5. Small img 0227 1320886164

So now you just keep repeating Steps 3 & 4, alternating stitching around the front and then around the back. When you get towards the end of the row, make you last Double Crochet around the outside "rung" then Chain 2 and turn.

When you get to the last bit of yarn you have left. You can just end on the end of one of your rows, but you'll notice that the beginning end has a bit of frill to it, and your ending one doesn't. Here's what you do to even it out. Make sure you have enough yarn to make 2 rows, even though you'll only be making one last row. Ok so lets say you just finished your 2nd to the last row, chained 2, and turned your project. Now work the same Double Crochet pattern you've been doing. But in between each Double Crochet, add in a Chain 2. (To break it down- You've just turned your project, work a front Double Crochet, Chain 2, work a back Double Crochet, Chain 2, work a front Double Crochet, Chain 2... Get it?) When your at the very end of the last row, make your last Double Crochet, then pull end of the yarn all the way through the last loop and tie a tiny knot to end it.

If that doesn't make any sense at all, you can watch how she does it in the youtube.com video. But don't pay attention to the first bit about how many chains she does at the beginning or the end where she put it together as an infinity scarf. If it did make sense, then YEY! Oh and if you want to make a little flower pin for your scarf too, here is the link for that tutorial on youtube.com http://youtu.be/W0W2W1_YAg0
