I created this pattern after seeing a similar hat being sold by a store named "Banana Republic". The button band on the original hat was much thinner, but since I had a much larger button that I wanted to use, I designed the band to be much wider to accommodate it.

(Note: You will start by knitting a flat garter stitch rectangle that will be joined for knitting in the round.) Pattern Instructions: Cast on 90 stitches with circular needles. (RS) Knit entire row. (WS) Knit entire row. Continue this way in garter stitch until piece measures 2 inches, ending with a wrong side row. (RS) Bind off 13 stitches (77 stitches remain). Knit to end of row. DO NOT TURN. You will now join for knitting in the round. Place marker to mark the beginning of the round and join by knitting the first stitch after the bound off section. Continue knitting each round until the hat measures 6 inches from cast on edge.
Crown Shaping: (Transfer stitches to dpn when the circumference is too small to knit with the circular needles). (K9, K2TOG) to end. (K8, K2TOG) to end. (K7, K2TOG) to end. (K6, K2TOG) to end. (K5, K2TOG) to end. (K4, K2TOG) to end. (K3, K2TOG) to end. (K2, K2TOG) to end. (K1, K2TOG) to end. (K2TOG) to end. Cut yarn end and weave through the remaining 7 stitches twice with tapestry needle. Secure the “garter flap” (created from the 13 st bind off) to the hat by sewing the button to the flap through both layers. Weave in ends.
