How to make a Mockingjay pendant inspired by the movie The Hunger Games. Welcome to my very first tutorial, I would like to apologize in advance for the hell you are about to enter and I hope that you are able to follow these steps to create your own. Okay so here we go...

Instructions

  1. Small 1

For this project you will need; *Oven Baked Clay (FIMO soft was used in this tutorial) *Craft knife *Roller or anything with the ability to roll the clay smooth *Drawing or print out of the original design.

  2. Small 2

Once you have your sketch or print out, you are going to cut out the MockingJay bird carefully...this will be used later to create the base.

  3. Small 3

Now, taking the circle outline and a medium size ball of your clay, you are going to roll it out and place the drawing over it in order to cut around using your craft knife. If you have items around your house that can cut out two circles, I would recommend this technique...and you will see why.

  4. Small 4

Once you have cut out two circles in whichever technique you desire, it will look something like this...or better! You want to put this in the oven for the required time that your clay needs to harden. (FIMO = gas mark 2 for 30mins)

  5. Small 5

Now for the bird. Using your cut out section of the mockingjay, you want to place this onto a thin piece of smooth rolled out clay.

  6. Small 6

After you have removed your sketch carefully, it should look like this...

  7. Small 7

For the wings.. Taking a small piece of rolled out clay, cut around the wing area of the bird (still using the drawing if you wish). In order to make the feathers, I took my craft knife and gently pushed down starting from the bottom of the wing. This will create a fold-like texture.

  8. Small 8

With a little pressure, place the new wings on top of the previously cut bird base. If you wish, you can go in again with your craft knife and retouch the feathers and round the edges.

  9. Small 12

Now taking smaller sections and repeating the same technique for the feathers, all you have to do is place them on top of each other, layering. It should now look something like this...

  10. Small 13

To finish the edging of the wings, you want to roll out a thin piece of clay in a snake like fashion and place it around the edge as shown. This will act as the bone structure of the Mockingjay...

  11. Small 10

We can't have a headless bird so... Taking a small ball of the clay and a cut out of the beak, you want to carefully merge them together while adding texture with your craft knife. Don't forget the eyes

  12. Small 14

Just like the previous step, you want to do the same with the body. To play it all together, you want to adjust the head so that the beak is not directly on top of the base. Similar to this...

  13. Small 17

We are almost finished! (woohoo) To create the arrow, I have used a small cocktail stick and the details can be done with the clay. This will make the arrow straight and strong. All that is left now is to paint the arrow black to match the rest of the piece.

  14. Small 19

After cooking the bird in the over for a further 30 mins, I glued the bird to the ring as shown in your initial sketch. This step is really just a based on preference. I covered the piece is clear varnish to add a little shine however it lost the detail so it is really up to you if you want to follow this step.
