Want to send a message to someone? Wear your chosen finger with pride? This is the perfect way to do it. Give someone the middle finger--in irony or in solidarity--or post it as a reminder to take no...prisoners. With this pattern you'll craft an object of digital beauty out of felt. It can be an ornament, a wall hanging, or just a badge. When you finish your project it will be ~3.6" round.

Print out this PDF—instructions and pattern.
Cut out all pattern pieces—only cut outlines except where marked (other lines inside the piece are guides for stitch detail.
Cut out approximate-sized pieces of felt for each pattern piece (I find it better to have smaller pieces to work with before taping)
Tape down pattern pieces to felt in the colors indicated on the pattern—being careful not to tape over places where you’re going to do stitch detail.
Cut one piece of ribbon/rick-rack for ornament hanging. (Optional! Approx 6” long, though this is up to you.)
Cut out two blue background circles.
Form a loop with the ribbon and glue the ends in between the blue background circle pieces. Be sure to do this far enough away from the edge so you can still easily stitch without having to go through glue (err toward the center).
Using the overcast stitch (shown below) and blue thread, stitch your blue background circle pieces together around the edges. Set aside. (You may glue down the loose ends to the back as you please.)
Cut out two of the yellow burst. Glue these together (stitching doesn’t work well with very fine pieces, like the ends of the burst)
Glue the yellow burst onto the front of the blue circle piece.
Using backstitch technique (shown in next step) stitch hand detail onto the hand piece—using a felt-matching color for the spaces that indicate fingers and a slightly darker color for the lines that indicate knuckles/joints.I like to stitch detail before cutting out the felt pieces—it makes for less slippage. Use your paper pattern as a guide.
Note: You’ll be using the backstitch for this detail work.
Cut out detailed hand. Carefully remove paper pattern (it will be stitched on, but with small stitches it should be easy to carefully remove this) and set aside.
Cut out the small nail pieces.
Glue the nail pieces to the hand on the middle finger and thumb.
Glue the hand to the center of the ornament.
Hang your ornament on your tree. Or on your wall. Or wherever. Note: This can also be a badge—just leave the ribbon out of it.
