I bought a beanie a couple of years ago and I really love it. I wanted another one so I decided to re-recycle a sweater (I had already made it into a vest)and make another beanie. Measure the circumference of your head. Fold a piece of pattern or news paper in half and draw a half circle as wide as your head measurement.
Fold your sweater in half. Place the pattern piece with the straight edge on the fold. Trace around the pattern piece about 1/2" away from the pattern.
Cut the circle out. If you're using a sewing machine, zig zag stitch around the sweater to prevent fraying. If not, you may want to whip stitch around the edge or use fray check to keep it from unraveling.
Sew a wide (baste) stitch around the entire circle. If using a sewing machine, pull the bottom thread so that the fabric begins to gather. Allow it to fold in on itself all the way around.
Fold the fabric in 1/2" and press it down. <----------Your hat should look like this
Sew this edge down. Try to stitch as close to the raw edge as possible. This creates the casing for the elastic. Leave a small opening.
Cut a piece of elastic a little shorter than your head measurement. You don't want it too tight though. Put a safety pin on the end of the elastic. (It's helpful to put a safety pin on the other end too...just in case it slips)
Thread the elastic through the opening. Stitch the ends of the elastic together and close the small opening.
That's a wrap!! You're all done!! You can add things likes flowers and buttons to jazz it up a bit. I left mine plain so it's more versatile.
