A simple knitted pattern using garter stitch and slipped stitches to make a subtly textured and patterned fabric. Made from a lovely cotton/linen yarn complemented by a cotton/linen blend fabric backing with button closure. Suitable for beginner knitters.

You Will Need (7 things)

  • 210m/230yd per ball - 4 x 50g balls Isager Bomulin 75% cotton/25% linen 4ply/ Fingering Weight Yarn
  • 3.5mm/US4 needles Knitting Needles /size to obtain gauge
  • Blunt tipped Yarn Needle
  • 3 x 22mm/7/8” Buttons
  • 50 x X 70cm (20” x 35”) rectangle of linen/ Cotton blend fabric
  • Walking/even feed sewing Machine Foot for cushion assembly
  • 45 x X 45cm (18” x 18”) Cushion insert

Steps (2 steps, 240 minutes)

    PATTERN
    Note: yarn is held double throughout slip all stitches as if to purl
    Cast on 103 stitches knit 2 rows
    Start pattern
    Row 1 - 7: knit
    Row 8 (RS): k2, *(k2, sl7 wyb, k2), repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2 Row 9: knit all sts
    Repeat Rows 8 & 9 five times
    Row 20: Row 21: Row 22:
    repeat row 8 knit
    knit
    Repeat 22 pattern rows eight times (nine pattern repeats in total)
    knit all sts for 7 rows CO all sts
    To finish cushion front: wet block and ‘square up’

    ASSEMBLE CUSHION
    Note: 1cm/3/8” seam allowance included in cutting instructions; 3.75cm/1.5” overlap for button bands included in cutting instructions
    Cut 2 x fabric rectangles 43cm x 29cm (17 1/4” x 11 1/2”) Overlock or neaten all raw edges in your preferred manner.
    • on each fabric rectangle fold one 43cm/17 1/4” edge back 3.75cm/1.5”
    • using buttonhole foot, sew three buttonholes on the folded edge of one fabric rectangle -
    place one buttonhole 7cm/2 718” in from each side edge and the third buttonhole spaced
    evenly between them.
    • set stitch length to near basting length (4 on most machines)
    • aligning all raw edges, with right sides together and using walking/even feed foot, sew
    cushion back and front together
    • turn cushion right side out
    • sew buttons in place
    Lastly - insert cushion insert and enjoy your beautiful new cushion!
