We were invited to an Alice In Wonderland themed surprise party at the weekend, so I made a teapot top hat for Tom and a teacup fascinator for myself so we could be the perfect tea pouring couple!
Start by making the card base for your top hat. I traced around a large dinner plate onto the card as it was the perfect size for my hat.
Cut this out.
Trace around a small side plate in the middle of the hat.
Carefully cut out this circle with a cutting knife. We'll use both of these circles, so try to keep them both neat as you cut.
Cut a rectangle wide enough to fit around the circumference of the middle circle and about 7" tall. Score a line 1/2" from the top and 1/2" from the bottom. I didn't have a piece of card wide enough, so I used two.
Cut little slits all the way along the top and bottom of the hat, stopping at the scored lines.
Bend the tabs at the bottom of the hat forward and the tabs at the top of the hat back.
Bend the rectangle into the shape of the middle circle and place inside the hat. Bend the edges inwards so that they meet neatly on the outside with the two folded edges touching.
Flatten out the tabs underneath the hat.
Glue or tape down the tabs with duct tape.
Cut a piece of card in the shape of a teapot handle.
Cut two pieces of black felt in the same shape.
Glue the card template in between the two pieces of felt and trim off any excess felt.
Place the felt handle in between the join where the middle of the hat meets and glue in place. Repeat this process to make a spout and cut a thin slash in the front of the hat to fit the spout in place.
Cover the outside of the teapot with felt, glueing in place with PVA glue.
Cut a circle of felt slightly wider than the plate you made earlier and use the small card circle as a template to cut a hole out of the middle. Cut a slit at one edge of the circle and slip onto the bottom of your hat. Glue in place. Repeat for the underside of the hat.
Glue the cut out circle onto the card circle for the top of your teapot.
Glue the top of the teapot on to the top tabs and you're basic hat is finished.
Decorate the hat by glueing a decorative trim around the brim of the hat, bottom and top rim of the teapot and top of the spout.
Glue some gold lace around the middle of the teapot.
Cut a piece of card in the shape of a handle for the lid with a long rectangle coming down and glue felt to either side.
Cut a slit in the middle of the top of your hat.
Glue the bottom of the handle and slip into the lid. Decorate with some trim and a couple of gems.
Add any additional gems or decorations you like.
Cut a length of wired ribbon long enough to fit around your head and tie in a nice big bow and attach the middle of the ribbon inside the hat with duct tape.
You're all done and ready for the tea party!
