Description

We were invited to an Alice In Wonderland themed surprise party at the weekend, so I made a teapot top hat for Tom and a teacup fascinator for myself so we could be the perfect tea pouring couple!

Instructions

  1. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 190827 img 3611

Start by making the card base for your top hat. I traced around a large dinner plate onto the card as it was the perfect size for my hat.

  2. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 190911 img 3612

    Cut this out.

  3. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 190946 img 3613

Trace around a small side plate in the middle of the hat.

  4. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 191004 img 3614

Carefully cut out this circle with a cutting knife. We'll use both of these circles, so try to keep them both neat as you cut.

  5. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 191027 img 3618

Cut a rectangle wide enough to fit around the circumference of the middle circle and about 7" tall. Score a line 1/2" from the top and 1/2" from the bottom. I didn't have a piece of card wide enough, so I used two.

  6. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 191213 img 3619

Cut little slits all the way along the top and bottom of the hat, stopping at the scored lines.

  7. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 191408 img 3622

Bend the tabs at the bottom of the hat forward and the tabs at the top of the hat back.

  8. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 191438 img 3621

Bend the rectangle into the shape of the middle circle and place inside the hat. Bend the edges inwards so that they meet neatly on the outside with the two folded edges touching.

  9. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 191531 img 3620

Flatten out the tabs underneath the hat.

  10. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 191607 img 3627

Glue or tape down the tabs with duct tape.

  11. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 191555 img 3623

Cut a piece of card in the shape of a teapot handle.

  12. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 191757 img 3624

Cut two pieces of black felt in the same shape.

  13. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 191819 img 3625

Glue the card template in between the two pieces of felt and trim off any excess felt.

  14. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 191907 img 3626

Place the felt handle in between the join where the middle of the hat meets and glue in place. Repeat this process to make a spout and cut a thin slash in the front of the hat to fit the spout in place.

  15. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 192006 img 3628

Cover the outside of the teapot with felt, glueing in place with PVA glue.

  16. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 192103 img 3631

Cut a circle of felt slightly wider than the plate you made earlier and use the small card circle as a template to cut a hole out of the middle. Cut a slit at one edge of the circle and slip onto the bottom of your hat. Glue in place. Repeat for the underside of the hat.

  17. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 192212 img 3632

Glue the cut out circle onto the card circle for the top of your teapot.

  18. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 192238 img 3633

Glue the top of the teapot on to the top tabs and you're basic hat is finished.

  19. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 193418 img 3634

Decorate the hat by glueing a decorative trim around the brim of the hat, bottom and top rim of the teapot and top of the spout.

  20. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 193549 img 3637

Glue some gold lace around the middle of the teapot.

  21. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 193606 img 3635

Cut a piece of card in the shape of a handle for the lid with a long rectangle coming down and glue felt to either side.

  22. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 193619 img 3636

Cut a slit in the middle of the top of your hat.

  23. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 193630 img 3760

Glue the bottom of the handle and slip into the lid. Decorate with some trim and a couple of gems.

  24. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 193639 img 3761

Add any additional gems or decorations you like.

  25. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 193652 img 3759

Cut a length of wired ribbon long enough to fit around your head and tie in a nice big bow and attach the middle of the ribbon inside the hat with duct tape.

  26. Small 110695 2f2015 08 30 193701 img 3640

You're all done and ready for the tea party!
