Don't you dare call this a casserole! Hot dish is the official food of Minnesota. Variations abound but this one covers the basics. Put your own spin on it and enter it in a hot dish contest! (yes that is something you can do here). Quick to prepare, and warm and filling for those long dark winter days. It is a staple for M N families.

First gather your ingredients. Tater tots, cream of mushroom soup, A bag of frozen vegetables, ground beef, and cheese, and milk, (not pictured)
Brown your beef in a frying pan and at the same time Start layering your other ingredients. Frozen veg on the bottom.
then spread out the ground beef
here you spread out the soup, straight from the can, and then then a can of milk on top of that.
most importantly, 2 cups of shredded cheese any kind. cheddar or Colby is best.
finally the tots! this takes a big bag of lots you want to tightly cover the surface. Pack them in!
you can toss this in the fridge for awhile, or you can bake right away I bake 400 degrees for 40 minutes. that is very flexible as well. Adjust for your needs and you know it is done when the hot dish is bubbling up and the tots are crisp.
Look At that delicious oooey goooey mess. I sometimes add in Step 2 or 3 : canned or fresh mushrooms; leftover cooked vegetables from the fridge; olives, fried onions, cooked celery or garlic, Substitute your beef with beans on TVP; Elk, venison or game.
Serve with ketchup, hot sauce, and a green salad. Extra Credit if you have JELLo for dessert with some fruit suspended in It.
