This is a very easy rug to make even for a beginner as it only involves chain stitch and double crochet. Once you know these stiches you can almost make this in yor sleep. Any colors can be used and you can add more colors if you like.I have a few official tartan patterns available or make up your own BASIC CROCHET INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL RUGS: The rugs are made by constructing a striped crocheted lattice wich is 116 rows long. The lattice is made by using only 2 stitches: 1 double crochet and a chain. There are 116 spaces across the width of the rug, When you weave the corrosponding chain lengths through the rug in exactly the same order down as you did across, the tartan effect is achieved. The weaving is done from top to bottom Some of the rugs I will show you are done with 238 chain = 117 spaces original patterns by Jenny King MEASUREMENTS: approx 116cm by 130cms HOOK SIZE I used a 4mm but you can use what ever just make sure the thicker the yarn the larger the hook the bigger the rug YARN: I used 8ply Australian (Carnival) medium worsted but again you can use what ever pleases you

TO MAKE A PATTERN Decide on your colours, here I am using light blue, red, and lime green.REPEAT THIS A FEW TIMES If you can, plot a pattern on a piece of paper. I AM JUST SHOWING A VERY SIMPLE PATTERN your rows will be mirror image eg. 6 rows blue, 4 rows red, 2 green then 4 rows red, 6 rows blue as long as it adds up to 116
your chain stripes down your rug will be in exactly the same color order as your rows accross
Using the first color in your list make 236 chain make a slip knot to start
TO CHAIN wrap yarn around hook and pull through loop repeat continue for 236 chains
your chain
1 double crochet in the 6th chain from the hook DOUBLE CROCHET: yarn over hook
put hook through hole
yarn over hook pull through hole 3 loops on hook
yarn over hook pull through 2 loops leaving 2 loops yarn over hook pull through 2 loops 1 loop on hook
chain 1
miss a chain go into next hole
do 1 double crochet NEXT *chain 1, 1miss 1 chain, 1 double crochet in next chain*; repeat to end 116 spaces/gaps please count them
your beginning lattice the original chain of 236 is not classed as a row so this is row 1
NEXT ROW 2 Chain 4. this is equal to a double crochet and a 1 chain, TURN WORK
miss 1 chain space, and double crochet in the top stitch of the double crochet in the row below
* chain 1, miss 1 chain, 1 double crochet in top of next double crochet repeat to end working your last double crochet in the 3rd chain at the begining of last row repeat row 2 over and over. work the color changes as in your pattern until you have completed 116 rows leaving a long enough yarn tail at each change to be sewn in
your lattice complete
make chain lengths about a couple of cm longer than the length of your rug, in the same color combination as the width of your rug leaving a 10 cmm yarn tail for sewing in later eg 6 blue, 4 red, 2 green and so on
Starting at the top of your rug and using a safty pin as a shuttle weave your chain length through the holes,( I COULDN"T FIND ONE) starting from the front of the rug at the top, down to the bottom of the rug
repeat this with the next chain length color on your pattern, starting at the back of the rug this time. continue weaving yor chain lengths alternating starting from front of rug to back then front and so on
Once you have finished weaving, sew all yor ends in neatly making sure they will not come loose
FRINGE IF YOU DESIRE use a medium sized book or a piece of stiff cardboard about 15cmm wide, or however long you wish your fringe wind your yarn around it several times evenly do this with each color varying the amount to if you used alot of one color or a little
fold your 3 lengths in half find a row on your rug the same color and using your hook put the hook through the end hole of the row pull the loop of your fringes partly through that hole
hook the strands of the fringe hanging down up through the fringe loop continue around rug filling each space trim fringe neatly YOUR RUG IS FINISHED
