My mother was hinting that I should make cupcakes all week for my brother when he gets home tonight from college, and finally I decided I would. He said he's sick of rich gourmet food (he goes to culinary school) and misses home cooking, and he's always had a soft spot for my baking. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to make my cake mix from scratch, so I had to settle for boxed cake mix, but that stuff is still so tasty he won't really care. I hope you guys enjoy it, and please post any versions you make!

Instructions

  1. Small valentinecupcakes001

Find yourself a box of cake mix you like (or if you have the time and a good recipe, make white cake mix on your own). I'm using Duncan Hines.

  2. Small valentinecupcakes002

Read the instructions on the back and gather the ingredients. This box calls for 1 & 1/3 C Water, 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil, and 3 egg whites. Now, mix, mix, mix!

  3. Small valentinecupcakes003

Also, don't forget to set the oven (like I did). I'm assuming you're all making cupcakes, so put your cupcake papers in a cupcake tray.

  4. Small valentinecupcakes006

Pour the batter in until the cup is half full and sprinkle about six of these cheap-o (but super tasty & semi-spicy) Cinnamon Imperial Hearts directly onto each gooey lump of uncooked deliciousness. Now go ahead and pop them in the oven for about 20 minutes.

  5. Small valentinecupcakes004

Once the time is up, test a few cupcakes with a toothpick to see if their centers are cooked. If they aren't, pop'em back in for a few minutes. If they are, set them out and allow 20 minutes for cooling time. At this point you should have your yummy container of frosting out (or for those with the time to make it from scratch, your own).

  6. Small valentinecupcakes005

20 minutes over with? Frost! Frost! Frost!

  7. Small valentinecupcakes008

Once you've finished frosting, put a single cinnamon heart at the center of each cupcake.

  8. Small valentinecupcakes010

Sprinkle on about fifteen per cupcake.

  9. Small valentinecupcakes007

Spend the next hour sorting through a Funfetti frosting container for only the red sprinkles. Or just go and buy a container of red sprinkles.

Then consume with unbridled joy because these suckers are SO GOOD. Also, the hearts will melt and leave trails of cinnomany goodness throughout the cupcake. Some of them will stick to the bottom, but trust me--paper is edible. =D
