Sweater Fabric Flowers

Don't throw out those old holey sweaters. They make fabulous flowers!

The flower only takes about 15 minutes to make. Using different color sweaters can give the flowers more depth. I only used one color for mine because I cut a turtle neck sweater that was too long to make my flower. Now I have an accessory to match my sweater. I look forward to seeing the different versions of this flower. XD

You Will Need (3 things)

  • Sewing Machine
  • Creativity !
  • Sweater various colors

Steps (6 steps, 15 minutes)

  1. 1

    -Start by cutting the sweater into strips about 1/2" to 1" wide.
    -The strips should only be about 10-12" long.

    -Use the zig-zag setting on your machine to sew along one edge of the strip.

    -Stay as close to the edge as possible. It's ok to even go off the edge (as if you are simulating a serge stitch.)

    -As you sew along the edge, pull the sweater towards you. The sewn edge of the sweater should begin to look wavy.

    -The smaller the zig zag, the more wavy the edge. The wider the zigzag, the less wavy the edge.

    This step can be done by hand or on the machine. I did mine by hand.

    Sew a baste (or wide) stitch along the bottom of the strip as illustrated to the left.

    After the stitch is made, pull the sweater to create a gather. (I really tried to make the pic look like a gather...really!)

    -The strip should start to look like a flower. Connect the ends of the material together so that you have a doughnut shape. Play around with them until you get the perfect flower.

    -Hand stitch a small stitch to connect them.

    -If you want a multi-colored flower repeat this process until you have the desired amount of layers.

    -Using a piece of sweater that has not been zig zag stitched, tie a large knot in the center of the strip.

    -Thread the knot into the center of your flowers.

    -Pull the extra ends of the knotted strip through so that they are in the back of your flower and the knot is the only thing showing.

    -Making a small stitch behind the flower will help keep the knot secured to the rest of the flower.
