A real simple skirt that you can make in an afternoon and wear tons of different ways.
Gather supplies and cut fabric: Cut a thin strip for the elastic casing. Take your waist measurement and add 3 inches for seam allowance. Cut are large piece for the skirt. Cut a piece 1 1/2 times your hip measurement and add 3 inches for seam allowance.
Make casing for elastic. Fold the thin piece of fabric in half and pin.
Stitch edge. Pink edge and turn right side out (I used a straight pin to help pull the fabric out). Iron flat.
feed elastic through the casing using a safety pin. Stitch elastic to the casing ends.
gather skirt: sew 2 parallel, loose stitches at the top edge of your skirt fabric leaving long trails at each end.
Pull the top threads of each line of stitching to evenly gather the skirt so that it matches the length of your waistband.
pin waist band to gathered skirt. stitch together leaving a inch seam allowance.
Trim edge to reduce bulk at the waist.
Determine the length you want and cut fabric leaving an inch and a half seam allowance. Stitch back seam leaving a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Pink seam and iron to one side.
hem: fold hem under twice and pin.
stitch and iron hem.
and you're done!
