We found this squirrel on a vintage children’s outfit and we drew our own design. A visit by the squirrel is part of Christmas here, and we hope he stays until spring.

We had a squirrel that used to come to the bird feeder every Christmas for many years. He even hung around well into spring. There were a lot of nuts in the feeder, since there aren’t that many nut-eating animals here. In the early years, he was a spry little rascal that ran around the house along a decorative molding and sat on the waterspout. The last time we saw him, he had gray down his back, and couldn’t run the same way along the molding anymore. He didn’t come back the next Christmas.
We’ve seen this pattern in lots of places: a child’s mitten from Hallingdal, in German patterns, and on several Latvian mittens. We named it the Dovre ball because Arne’s grandfather had a knit jacket with this pattern. We used it on several sweaters and scarves over the years we’ve worked as knitwear designers. On a Christmas ball, it resembles a pattern on an old glass ornament.
