You Will Need (12 things)
- 1 Large Catering Pan
- Sink
- Stovetop
- 1 gal Water
- 2 cup Distilled White Vinegar
- 1 Salt Shaker
- Wool Wash
- 3 Hanks Yarn
- 1 Spray Bottle
- 1 Drying Rack
- 3 packets Powder Fabric Dye in 3 colors of choice
- 1 Funnel
Steps (9 steps, 60 minutes)
-
1
Soak yarn in sink with approximately 3/4 gallon of water and 1 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar for approximately 10 minutes. Remove yarn from sink (do not wring out water) and place in large catering pan. Ripple or wave the yarn in the pan so that it is evenly spread.
-
2
Choose your first speckling color. Put about 1 tsp of powered dye into a salt shaker. Evenly shake the dye over the yarn.
-
3
Once all the powdered dye has been sprinkled over the yarn, repeat the same process with the other two dyes.
-
4
Place catering pan on the stovetop. Turn burner on to a low-medium heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes.
-
5
While the yarn is simmering, fill up a spray bottle using a funnel with a 50/50 mixture of distilled white vinegar and water.
-
6
Turn off the burner, remove catering pan and spritz with the vinegar/water mixture with the spray bottle. This will help set the dye and prevent bleeding.
-
7
Once the yarn is cool, remove from pan to the sink. Rinse with cool water. Then plug the sink and fill with water (cold) and add wool wash (according to package). Lightly agitate yarn, but be careful to not tangle it. Remove the yarn from the wash and gently squeeze excess water out (but do not wring or twist yarn). Hang on a drying rack to dry.

Once the yarn is dry, twist into hanks for storage.
