I learned to make these 12 years ago and I am still thrilled every time someone wants me to make one for them. They still make me smile and I love to see people's faces when they first see the sparkleballs.
i had no idea what these were when i saw the picture i might make a few of these and freak people out, hanging them in trees so they look like ufo's XD...or would i start a fire? o.o i'd better not
but thanks for hsaring your great how-to for something so very wonderful ^_^
I remember seeing this when i was younger and the lady who had them was actually selling them but at like 60$ each! I'm glad I know how to make them now, the moment I get the chance I'm going to make one!
This... this is like soo sick omg!!! But like if i left it on for prolonged periods of time will it like burn down my house or start a small forest fire and kill bunnys 0.o
I thought i would add a tip: If you cannot get ahold of a soldering iron, to make hole in the cups get a pair of pliers and heat the tip of a nail with stove fire/lighter and push it through.
Oh wow I love the look of the sparkleballs. I would love to make some for my next house party. Even though it seems to be meant for Christmas, I am sure that I can adjust them to look not so Christmas-y.
If you plan to make a sparkleball, there are some useful tips here http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf82354075.tip.html from editors of that site. They must be pro-crafters, and they had a few things to add to my instructions. Very helpful if you're serious about this project.
I made two last night...I would suggest using 2 50 light strings instead of 1 100 string. Easier to join the halves that way! Make sure to get the end to end connectable kind then just plug the 2 together inside the ball.
They were really easy to make and surprisingly fast! Thanks for the idea!!!
Don't be afraid to buy odd lights (either in shape, color or number.) The odd ones are always left over after Christmas, and a sparkleball made of mismatched lights might be quite lovely. Monica's miniball was made with 50 blue and white bubble lights I bought on sale for almost nothing.
I've never had a problem with the lights getting too hot. The kind I've used are all safe-tested for use indoors for the holidays, anyway. In the US we can order them yearround from Christmas websites, and I usually shop for the best prices.

Thanks for all the hard work showing us a neat new craft.
