These slippers are really easy to make and a quirky way to show someone you love them this Valentines day! I've used felt for mine but you can use so many other types of materiel, including up-cycling old jumpers and scarf's you have lying around

You Will Need (4 things)

  • Cardboard
  • Sewing Machine
  • Felt (I used red and grey)
  • Red Thread

Steps (16 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

Draw round your feet on cardboard and cut them out

I know - my fox slippers (from primark) are cute, but you can never have too many pairs

  2. 2

Pin the cardboard to some doubled over felt

  3. 3

Cut round the cardboard, giving you 4 pieces of felt - 2 for each foot

  4. 4

Take another piece of felt (this time you don't need to double it over) and cut out a larger shape around both feet, about 2 inches all the way round.

  5. 5

Repeat this again but only for the front half of the foot this time - this will be the top of your slipper

  6. 6

Take one of your larger pieces of felt and the sole pieces for one foot.

Place a sole piece on the front and back of the larger piece, so that they match up exactly and then pin it all together. This makes the bottom of your slipper 3 layers thick

Use your sewing machine to stitch round the edge of your sole shape (red in my picture). If you have not matched the feet up exactly then you may find the other sides has gaps in the stitching when you turn it over - just flip it round and stitch round the edge of that sole as well were needed

    Repeat for both feet

  7. 7

Now you need to pick up one of the front pieces of your slipper, fold over the straight edge and sew it down for a hem

Again, repeat for both feet - in fact this goes for the rest of the steps

  8. 8

Put your sole piece on the floor and place your foot on top of it. Then take the front of your slipper and place it hem side up on top of your foot, pinning it in place.

Best way to do this is holding the bottom piece of material up the side of your foot and pin it to the front piece at the top of your foot, so that you get the edge going round the side of your slipper

  9. 9

Cut off the excess felt round the front of the slipper ( don't cut the rest off round the slipper as you'll need it for a hem

Flip the slipper inside out and you will see your slipper begin to take shape

  10. 10

Now fold the remaining edges in on themselves and sew so you have a hem going all the way round - it doesn't matter that the back is still square

  11. 11

At the back of your slipper, cut 2 slits until you reach the back of the sole

  12. 12

Take the two outer slices and fold them over each other, sewing them in place.

I cut some corners off the felt as I was doing it so that they didn't stick out the top of the slipper

  13. 13

Fold the middle flap up over the back of the slipper and pin in place

Make sure your foot still fits in it before sewing in place - sometimes you can pull the back up to far and make the slipper just a bit too small

  14. 14

Cut a heart out of felt and sew the word "Solemates" on it

You also need to cut out another heart and cut it in half, from top to bottom

  15. 15

Hand stitch the heart onto one slipper and then the half heart on the other

With the half heart - make sure that the middle of the heart is stitched to the outer side of your slipper so when the other person is standing next to you the hearts match up

  16. 16

Grab your partner and draw round their feet so you can make another pair for them (or find their flipflops/slippers to draw round if you want to keep it a surprise)

This time when you sew on the half heart, place their slippers next to yours and figure out where the heart needs to go
