The Solar System is so inspirational, and this quilt was created to pay homage to our home in the Universe. With a modern look and a few embellishments, this beautiful quilt can be customized to suit your decor. While I don't have photos for the steps, this simple quilt is the perfect project for beginners and seasoned quilters alike.
The Solar System is so inspirational, and this quilt was created to pay homage to our home in the Universe. With a modern look and a few embellishments, this beautiful quilt can be customized to suit your decor. While I don't have photos for the steps, this simple quilt is the perfect project for beginners and seasoned quilters alike.
Prepare a long white rectangle of fabric and sew it onto a piece of batting that is a little bigger on all sides. Trim the batting so the edges are clean. Make a large orange or yellow rounded piece to be the sun and pin it on the left side of the work.
Cut out the rectangles for the planets, varying the size and colors. I used scrap fabrics and created the circles with templates from around the house. Coffee can lids, drinking glasses and whatnot make perfect circle templates.
For the next step, pin the circles onto the white fabric leaving space between the circles. Use decorative stitching or a zig zag stitch to sew around the appliques. Then lay the entire work onto the muslin backing with right sides together and sew around the outside edge with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Leave an opening along one edge to turn the work right side out.
Turn the work right side out and iron, paying special attention to the edges. Pin the opening closed and use a decorative or zig zag stitch to sew along the outer edge of the entire piece. Using black thread or another color of your choice, sew with the star like stitch or another decorative stitch in rows on the background.
Finally add Saturn's rings with embroidery floss, sew on a button moon by Earth and add a button for Jupiter's Great Red Spot. You could also add more embroidery if you wish along the edge of the sun. Make this project your own by varying the colors and layout, the sky's the limit!
