This simple cardigan is create by working a large blanket shape that is then seamed to create a slouchy, casual cardigan.

Steps (3 steps, 480 minutes)

  1. 1

    PATTERN
    Foundation chain: With the J/10 (6mm) hook threaded with a length of cord, hold the working yarn with a long tail and loosely chain 125 sts.
    Working into the second chain from the hook (chain on hook counts as first st), work along the chain to pick up 124 sts. (125 sts in total)
    Row 1: Draw the stitches onto the cord, then work a knit stitch into each stitch across the row. (125 sts on hook)
    Row 2: Draw the stitches onto the cord, then work a knit stitch into each stitch across the row. (125 sts on hook)
    These two rows form garter stitch.
    Continue in garter stitch for a further 13 rows; 15 rows in total.
    Next row: P all sts.
    Next row: K all sts.
    These two rows form stockinette (stocking) stitch.
    Continue in stockinette (stocking) stitch until work measures 30in (76cm), ending with a purl row.
    Next row: K all sts.
    Next row: K all sts.
    These two rows form garter stitch.
    Continue in garter stitch for a further 13 rows; 15 rows in total.
    Bind (cast) off.

    Tip
    You can double-check the size by slipping the cardigan on as you work.

    Make it Yours
    You can make a chunkier cardigan by doubling the yarn amounts and using the yarn held double, or picking a chunkier-weight yarn.

    Tip
    The seams are worked in mattress stitch; be sure to draw the sewing yarn through firmly so that the seams are barely visible.

    TO MAKE UP
    Weave in all ends.
    With the wrong side facing uppermost, fold the bound- (cast-) off edge to meet the cast-on edge. Where the bands of garter stitches meet on each side will be the underarm sections. Seam each underarm with mattress stitch for 5in (13cm) to create the sleeves.
