The blanket is a perfect size for wrapping your baby on the way home from the hospital, covering your baby in the car seat and, especially for bundling your baby up for snuggling. The lace pattern is easy to follow and looks more complicated than it is to knit. This design includes instructions on how to make the blanket a larger size and more variations for different styles of this blanket, if you wish to knit more. (This is a fun and addictive pattern!) BODY OF BLANKET - CO 152 sts, using the long tail cast on method. Clip a stitch marker to the very first stitch to denote the beginning of the row. Knit 8 rows. (4 garter ridges) Row 1 (RS) - (Sl1, k4), pm, (follow the Cathedral Window Lace pattern row 1 over the next 14 sts, pm)10x, p2, pm, k5 Row 2 - (Sl1, k4), sm, k2, (follow the Cathedral Window Lace pattern row 2 over the next 14 sts, sm)10x, sm, k5 Row 3 - (sl1, k4), sm, (follow the next Cathedral Window Lace pattern row over the next 14 sts, sm)10x, p2, sm, k5 Row 4 - (Sl1, k4), sm, k2, (follow the next Cathedral Window Lace pattern row over the next 14 sts, sm)10x, sm, k5 Repeat Rows 3 & 4 until you’ve completed the Cathedral Window Lace pattern (28 rows) 7 times - a total of 196 rows of lace. Knit 7 rows. (almost 4 garter ridges) BO loosely, leaving the last st on the needle and the yarn attached to the blanket. Do not turn.
CROCHET BORDER - Replace the knitting needle with the crochet hook. With the RS facing, you will be doing a row of single crochet sts (counterclockwise) around the entire perimeter of the blanket in this way...104 sts along the long side on the left, 152 sts along the bottom, 104 sts along the long side on the right, 152 sts along the top (512 sts total). Make a slip stitch between the last single crochet created and the very first single crochet. Next round, crochet a Scalloped Edge around the entire perimeter of the blanket.
SCALLOPED CROCHETED EDGE - (multiple of 6 sts + 2) Round 1 - 1 single crochet in the 2nd chain from hook, *skip 2 chains, 5 double crochets in next chain, skip 2 chains, 1 single crochet in next chain; rep from * around. Slip stitch the last chain with the first chain. Cut the yarn, leaving a 8” tail and pull the end through the remaining stitch. Using a tapestry needle and the yarn tail, connect the last st with the first st at the corner. Knot the end.
FINISHING - Weave in all ends neatly. Wash your blanket (by hand or on the gentle cycle of your washing machine), spin dry in a lingerie bag (or secured pillowcase) and pin out to desired measurements. Let dry completely. Yay! You’re done :D
VARIATIONS - (keeping in mind that variations will most likely require more yardage of yarn) - Each lace repeat is 3.5” tall. If you’d like to add more length to your blanket, you can add another full lace repeat (Rows 1-28) to the pattern and your blanket will be 3.5” taller with each repeat. - Each lace repeat is 2.5“ wide. If you’d like to add more width to your blanket, you can add another lace repeat (14 sts) to the pattern and your blanket will be 2.5” wider with each repeat. - You can add more pizazz to your blanket by using a different color for the crochet border, change to another color after each lace repeat (after the 28th row) to create stripes OR you could use a tone-on-tone or variegated colorway for the entire blanket.
