If you've treated yourself to a super slim laptop, the last thing you want to do is bulk it up with a giant case. Luckily, it's super easy to sew your own skinny case which you can slip it in to and protect it from scratches.
If you've treated yourself to a super slim laptop, the last thing you want to do is bulk it up with a giant case. Luckily, it's super easy to sew your own skinny case which you can slip it in to and protect it from scratches.
Start by making your template. Place your laptop in the middle of a large piece of paper and draw around the outline. Add a 5/8" seam allowance to all of the edges apart from the bottom edge and then add an extra inch to the top edge. Cut this template out.
Fold a piece of felt in half and pin the template on top, with the bottom edge against the folded edge of felt. Cut around the outline and then remove the template.
Fold the felt around your laptop and pin along the sides, making sure it has a nice snug fit. Remove the laptop, reposition the pins so they're nice and neat and then slip your laptop in to it again, making sure you've not made it too tight.
Repeat the first two steps to cut the main fabric and place it to one side.
Sew along the edges of felt, removing the pins as you go.
Slip the laptop inside to check the size is right one last time.
Cut off the excess felt from the sides.
Fold the outer fabric in half, so that the wrong sides are facing out and place the felt sleeve on top. Using the felt as a guide, pin along the edges of the outer fabric so that it's the same width as the felt sleeve.
Place the felt sleeve inside the outer fabric sleeve.
Place the laptop inside the sleeve and then fold back and pin the edges of the outer sleeve so that they're same height as the laptop.
Remove the laptop and felt sleeve and sew along the edges of the outer sleeve, removing the pins as you go.
Cut off the excess fabric from the edges of the outer sleeve.
Turn the outer sleeve inside out so that the right sides of the fabric are facing out.
Fold the edges of the felt sleeve back so that they're the same height as the laptop.
Pick a pretty button to match your case and cut a length of thin elastic in a corresponding colour.
Stitch the button in place with a needle and some embroidery floss or thick thread.
Place the felt sleeve inside the outer sleeve and pin around the edges. Make a loop with the elastic, long enough to reach the button when it stretches, and place in between the two sleeves in the center of the opening.
Stitch along the top edges of your sleeve, securing the loop in place.
Slip your laptop in one final time.
Stretch the elastic over the button to secure the laptop and you're all done!
