Basic pattern 1 Work sc (UK dc) in rows, with 1 ch at the beginning of each row to replace the first sc (UK dc). Basic pattern 2 Work dc (UK tr) in rows, starting each row with 3 ch to replace the first dc (UK tr).
For the front inside, work 54 ch + 1 turning ch, then work 10¼in (26cm) in basic pattern 2: dc (UK tr). Then for the base, work 2in (5cm) in basic pattern 1: sc (UK dc), and for the back 10¼in (26cm) in basic pattern 2. Work ½in (1cm) along the top edge in basic pattern 1. Then for the flap, work 9½in (24cm) in the lacy pattern as shown in the diagram. The pattern repeat consists of 9 stitches. Turn the rows as described above. Keep repeating the pattern and rows 2 to 7.
How to do it For the sides and the strap (make 1), work 8 ch + 1 turning ch. Work 64in (162cm) in basic pattern 1. Sew the narrow sides of the strap to the base, to both sides of the front inside and to the back. Steam the seams. Tip: If you prefer, sew a zip in the top edge of the front and back for added security; it will be concealed by the flap.
