I created these wallets for my Etsy shop, they are so simple to make with stunning results. These wallets are the perfect Christmas gift, and they don't take much fabric to make so you can raid your fabric scraps and make them for all your friends and family without breaking the bank.
I created these wallets for my Etsy shop, they are so simple to make with stunning results. These wallets are the perfect Christmas gift, and they don't take much fabric to make so you can raid your fabric scraps and make them for all your friends and family without breaking the bank.
Cut out all the pieces of fabric first. You will need an 8 inch by 8 inch piece for the exterior, one 8 inch by 8 inch square piece of thicker fabric for the lining, a 6 inch by 8 inch piece of fabric for the pocket and a 13 inch by 8 inch piece of fabric for the credit card slots. You will also need four strips of 2 inch by 10 inch fabric pieces for the binding. (These pieces can be patchwork, created by smaller bits of fabric, or created by whole cloth scraps.)
If you want to draw on the wallet I would recommend using muslin for the exterior. Then with fabric markers, create a design or write song lyrics on the muslin.
Pin the exterior fabric square to the lining fabric, wrong sides together. Using a zig zag stitch sew around the outside edges, attaching the two layers. Then iron the pocket in half, wrong sides together. Using a credit card as a template, fold and iron the 13 inch by 8 inch fabric rectangle to create three folds.
Stitch along the upper edges of the pocket and credit card slots with decorative stitching for a more finished look. Then pin the interior pocket and credit card slot to opposite sides of the lining. Stitch in place with a zig zag stitch around the edges. Next, find the middle point of the credit card slot and mark with a pin. Sew with a straight stitch down the center to create six credit card pockets.
Sew the hair elastic to the exterior of the wallet. Cut the hair elastic in half, pinch and sew the bottom edges of the elastic to the exterior of the wallet, using a zig zag stitch. Be sure to attach it to what will be the bottom of the wallet when closed.
Take two of the binding pieces and attach to the left and right side of the exterior of the wallet, using the presser foot as your guide for stitch width. Then fold the binding pieces in half, wrap around to the back of the wallet and sew down using a decorative or zig zag stitch. Do the same with the top and bottom binding pieces although this time tuck under the edges of the binding when you first start sewing. Stop sewing an inch before the end of the binding piece, fold under the end of the binding to give a clean edge and finish sewing. Finally attach a button onto the middle front of the wallet, making sure it lines up with the elastic. Hurrah!! You have just made a classy fabric wallet to give away or keep for yourself! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
