Create a windowsill display of row houses in bright New England colours or subdued Scandinavian ones, using scrap wood pieces and a bit of leftover paint. Great project to do with the kids and they can create their own village or town as well!

Description

Create a windowsill display of row houses in bright New England colours or subdued Scandinavian ones, using scrap wood pieces and a bit of leftover paint. Great project to do with the kids and they can create their own village or town as well!

Instructions

  1. Small 110772 2f2015 09 02 153154 scrap%2bwood%2bhouses%2b%2b %2b1

Collect up all of those leftover scrap wood bits lying around in your garage. For this project you'll need pieces with flat bottoms (for standing) and pitched tops (for rooftops).

  2. Small 110772 2f2015 09 02 153604 scrap%2bwood%2bhouses%2b%2b %2b4

If you don't have angled tops or flat bottoms - you'll want to cut these on your mitre saw - don't worry, it's not as intimidating as it sounds. Wear your protective ear and eyewear and have a friend close by for support (but you won't need it). Set your mitre saw to 0 degrees for your flat bottoms and at any angle you wish to create your roof tops. In the end though, you'll want your scrap pieces to be roughly the same height (but not exactly).

  3. Small 110772 2f2015 09 02 153627 scrap%2bwood%2bhouses%2b%2b %2b5

You'll want an odd number of pieces to create your display - be it 3, 5, 7 or 9 - of varying heights and depths. Here I have two sets, one for me and one for a friend. Finished height = 4", finished depth = 2" each.

  4. Small 110772 2f2015 09 02 153736 scrap%2bwood%2bhouses%2b%2b %2b10

Sand your pieces smooth. Using leftover paint and/or stain, paint your houses. I chose to create both a New England row house set and a Scandinavian- minimalist one, so you can get a couple of ideas. For both sets, I used a dark walnut stain for the roof tops.

You can use a sharpie marker to draw in windows and doors or, if you have a cutting machine, size down window and door files so they will fit and cut on adhesive vinyl. Adhere to your house and seal if you wish.

Set out on your windowsill and enjoy! Note: Change these up and create Holiday versions, complete with powdered snow and small wreaths on the door, or set a dollhouse pumpkin next to it for an Autumn feel. Add a hanger to the top and use them as ornaments. The sky's the limit!
