Bead a Scattered Flowers Necklace

This is an ‘anything goes’ project. You can really make this design your own by adding as many or as few pearls and flowers as you fancy to your creation. Be sparing and delicate or create a cacophony of colour! Unless otherwise stated, use any size pearls or rocailles. It’s easy to make too. Simple pearl stems and flowers are woven on to a basic string of rocailles. A decorative fastener and loop completes this floral forest of beads.

Description

This is an ‘anything goes’ project. You can really make this design your own by adding as many or as few pearls and flowers as you fancy to your creation. Be sparing and delicate or create a cacophony of colour! Unless otherwise stated, use any size pearls or rocailles. It’s easy to make too. Simple pearl stems and flowers are woven on to a basic string of rocailles. A decorative fastener and loop completes this floral forest of beads.

Instructions

  1. Small bm0908fig1lowres

Prepare your needle with 200cm of thread. Add a stop bead by picking up a large (size) emerald rocaille with your needle and moving it to about 20cm from the end of the thread. Loop your thread round and through again and pull tight.

  2. Small bm0908fig2lowres

Pick up 1 pearl, 15 small emerald rocailles, 1 pearl, 15 small emerald rocailles and 1 large pearl. Then pick up 45cm of large emerald rocailles and 1 pearl.

  3. Small bm0908fig3lowres

Pick up 8 small emerald rocailles followed by enough small emerald rocailles to make a loop around the large pearl you added (probably about 35). To make your fastening loop, pass your needle back down the eighth small emerald rocaille you picked up in this step.

  4. Small bm0908fig4lowres

Pass your needle down through the remaining 7 small emerald rocailles and the last pearl you added. Then pass through several of the large emerald rocailles on the main strand to where you want your first pearl stem or flower to be.

  5. Small bm0908fig5lowres

Pearl stem - Pick up a few small emerald rocailles, followed by 1 pearl. Pick up 1 emerald rocaille (either). Pass your needle back through all the beads on the stem excluding the last rocaille you picked up. Weave through the base to where the next stem will be.

  6. Small bm0908fig6lowres

Flower stem - Pick up as many small emerald rocailles as you want for your stem, followed by 8 small amethyst rocailles. Pass the thread through the first amethyst rocaille again.

  7. Small bm0908fig7lowres

Pick up one large emerald rocaille or small pearl and pass the thread through the fourth amethyst rocaille you added.

  8. Small bm0908fig8lowres

Pass your needle back through the amethyst rocailles round to the small emerald rocailles. Pass the needle down through these to the necklace base.

  9. Small bm0908fig9lowres

Continue along the base adding pearl and flower stems. Using the same technique add pearls and flowers without stems (as well as with) along the base as you go.

  10. Small bm0908fig10lowres

Adding extra thread – You will need to add more thread at some point. When you have approximately 7cm of thread left tie it in a very loose knot, leaving the loop open.

  11. Small bm0908fig11lowres

Prepare your needle with 2 metres of new thread. Place the tail end of your new thread inside the loose loop. Use a separate needle inside the loop to slide the knot up against the last rocaille. Knot the threads together tightly to secure.

  12. Small bm0908fig12lowres

Where you have joined extra thread, weave any loose ends into the necklace. Trim any excess thread

Your finished item should look something like this.
