Description

This design was inspired by a set of nails featured in Vivi June 2012 (Japanese nail art magazine). I tweaked the design a little to fit my taste. Just follow the steps below to try out these nails for yourself! Feel free to click on the pics to make them bigger. You can also find the complete list of polishes I used on my blog Liquid Jelly.

Instructions

  1. Small sailboat 8

Here's a picture of everything I used. You can visit my blog for specific polish names, but you can use any color combination you'd like.

  2. Small sailboat 7

Here are the three nail art tools I used (from top to bottom): Fine dotting tool for hearts and dots. Fine tip brush for coloring. Short striper for drawing and touch ups.

  3. Small sailboat 1

Paint your base the color you want your lowest stripe to be. Wait until the polish completely dry. Tape off the lower section to make your first stripe. Paint above the stripe in a different color. This color will be used to make the thinner stripes.

  4. Small sailboat 2

Once the second layer is dry, tape off sections of the second layer with striping tape. Paint different colors between the striping tapes. Slow drying polishes work best. Peel the tape off quickly or your stripes will pull off with it.

  5. Small sailboat 3

Draw hearts in a dark color using a medium dotting tool such as a bobby pin. Go back in with a fine dotting tool, like a toothpick, and draw colored hearts inside the dark ones. If you're unsure of how to draw the hearts, here's a simple tutorial (http://bit.ly/11PZMN8).

  6. Small sailboat 4

When you're done, it should look like this. Wait until the hearts are dry before sealing with top coat.

  7. Small sailboat 5

Now that your heart nails are done, time for the sailboat thumb. Follow steps 1 and 2 as shown above. Before attempting to draw the sailboats onto your nail, I suggest practicing a few times on paper with your brush and polish until you get it right. Once you're comfortable with drawing the sailboats on paper, go ahead and draw it on your thumb. With a dotting tool, add dots between the sailboats for the mini suns.

  8. Small sailboat 6

Fill in the dots with smaller orange and yellow dots. Using a fine tip brush, color one sail in each sailboat white. Finish with top coat. Now you're ready to flaunt your pretty artwork! :)
