Russian Easter Eggs

A fun way to create hollow, decorative Easter eggs.

It's a great project for those rainy April days. My sister, aunt, and I spent a whole afternoon making these together (makes me wish I was back in Oregon). This project really is not that hard, but it might take some time to get the hang of hollowing the eggs.

Description

It's a great project for those rainy April days. My sister, aunt, and I spent a whole afternoon making these together (makes me wish I was back in Oregon). This project really is not that hard, but it might take some time to get the hang of hollowing the eggs.

Instructions

  1. First make sure your egg is nice and clean.

  2. Small dscf2574 1237916481

At the top of the egg (the more narrow end), use the push pin to carefully puncture the egg shell and create a small hole. Make sure to do this step (and the next few steps) over a bowl so you don't make a mess.

  3. Small dscf2575 1237916496

Do the same to the opposite end of the egg (this hole should be slightly bigger).

  4. Small dscf2576 1237916520

Use the sewing needle to puncture the yolk by inserting the needle into the bigger bottom hole. (Move the needle around to make sure you break the yolk).

  5. Small dscf2579 1237916543

Now, by carefully holding the egg over the bowl, gently blow into the smaller top hole. It's ok to blow harder (the egg will be fine). What's left of the egg yolk should come out pretty easily. (if not, try using the sewing needle to make sure the yolk is broken). (Still having problems? Carefully make the bottom hole bigger by chipping the edges away with the pushpin).

  6. Small dscf2581 1237916600

Time to clean up. Hold the egg under the sink and allow warm water to enter the egg from the two holes. After you are sure that the inside is clean, blow out the excess water.

  7. Small dscf2591 1237916708

With the egg yolk, I made breakfast. Waste not!

  8. Small dscf2585 1237916620

Grab some napkins and tear out the designs you like. (You can cut them out, but it looks nicer if the edges are torn.)

  9. Small dscf2584 1237916644

Most napkins have two layers, a white one and the decorated one. Pull the white layer off and only ues the colored side to decorate.

  10. Small dscf2586 1237916655

Using the paint brush, place a thin layer of mod podge on the area of the egg you wish to decorate.

  11. Small dscf2587 1237916678

Place the selected napkin piece onto the glue. Add some more glue on top of the piece and use the brush to smooth it over the egg.

  12. Small dscf2590 1237916692

Continue until the entire egg is decorated. I wanted mine to look like it was covered in leaves. (To avoid touching areas that are finished, you can insert a long stick/chopstick/skinny pencil/screw driver into the larger hole to hold the egg up.)

  13. After the glue has dried, add a full layer of mod podge on the egg. Allow to dry.

  14. Small dscf2607 1237924237

Once dry, take the ribbon (about 7 inches long..)and fold it in half. Tie a knot with the two loose ends.

  15. Small dscf2608 1237924139

Insert the folded end with the needle into the larger bottom hole of the egg.

  16. Small dscf2610 1237924167

To make the ribbon go all the way to the other hole, use the sewing needle/chopstick/pencil to carefully push the ribbon where you want it to go. The knot should stop the ribbon from slipping through the egg.

  17. Small dscf2611 1237924118

To ensure the ribbon stays where you left it, glue the ribbon in place. Allow for dry time. And... ta da! Your done. Enjoy.
