First off, decide what kind of cake you're making. I did a vanilla and chocolate swirl sponge with butter icing. I doubled the recipe for a regular sponge for this cake.
Next, decide what shape of cake you're going to make. In this case, it was a rugby shirt, obviously! I don't have a rugby shaped tin, so I baked two cakes and then cut them into the shape of a rugby shirt using a template I had drawn onto greaseproof paper. One tip - try to make sure your cakes are baked to roughly the same depth. Allow to cool then arrange the cake onto a cake board and cover with butter icing (butter creamed with icing sugar). This helps to hold the whole cake together and tastes good too.
Once the butter icing has set, roll out the appropriate colour of fondant icing and drape over the cake. Smooth out bumps and trim edges. Cut out any extra bits and add these too - sticking them with extra butter icing. I used cookie cutters to cut letters, and more templates make out of greaseproof paper to make large numbers for the back of the shirt.
Add a ribbon around the bottom, candles and a party, et voila!
