Most people assume this is knitted i-cord or even 'french knitting'. It's not, instead casting on, knitting in the round and casting off gives the illusion of cord.

Rose Medusa Cowl Pattern Using circular needles in the size recommended for your yarn, cast on approximately 150 stitches. Knit 3 rows in stocking stitch 4th row: K6, then cast off all stitches until you come back to the original 6. 5th row: k6 (these 6 stitches form the 'spine' of the scarf which sits comfortably at the back of your neck) .. cast on a further 150 or so stitches. Varying the amount of the cast on stitches gives you the varying lengths of strands. Feel free to choose the sort of scarf you wish. Knit 3 rows in stocking stitch. 9th row: K6, then cast off all stitches until you come back to the original 6. 10th row: K6 and cast on a further 150 or so stitches and continue until you have 10 or 11strands. The scarf pictured has 11 strands. (The "Rose Medusa" scarf pictured is knitted on 4.0 circulars with 8ply. The scarf lengths vary from 145- 180 stitches) Final row. Cast off all stitches.

  2. The addition of a crocheted rose or 2 makes the cowl delightfully feminine. To make one (or 2 or more) .. Leaving a 10-12 inch tail, chain 41. Row 1 - Dc in 4th chain from hook. Ch 2, 2 dc in same space. *Ch 1, skip 2 chains. In next chain 2 dc, 2 ch, 2 dc. Repeat from * to the end. Ch 1, turn. Row 2 - Slip stitch into first ch 2 space. Chain 3, 6 dc in same space. *Sc in ch 1 space. 7 dc in next ch 2 space. Repeat from * to the end. Fasten off. Thread the tail end of the yarn onto a yarn sewing needle. Roll the crocheted piece to form a rose. Carefully stitch along the bottom and secure tightly so that it doesn't come 'unrolled'.
