Instructions

  1. Fabric quantities • Medium brown fabric A: 8 x 12 inches • Dark purple fabric B: 5 x 9 inches • Medium red fabric C: 3 x 3 inches • Medium yellow fabric D: 3 x 3 inches • White fabric E: 4 x 4 inches • Light blue fabric F: 13 x 18 inches • Dark purple fabric G: 13 x 18 inches

  2. Prepare the patches Rotary method • From fabric A, make one 2½-inch square • From fabrics A and C and fabrics C and F, make a 4½-inch corner square (see page 14) each • From fabrics A and F, make three 2½-inch half-square triangles (see page 12) • From fabrics A, B, and F, make a 4½-inch hexagon square (see page 15) • From fabrics A and E and fabrics B and F, make a 2½-inch half-square triangle (see page 12) each • From fabrics D and F, make a 4½ x 2½-inch right tapered rectangle • From fabric F, cut one 4½ x 2½-inch rectangle, two 2½-inch squares, and two 12½ x 2½-inch rectangles • From fabric G, cut two 2½ x 1-inch rectangles or Template cutting Using the 6 x 6 templates (pages 278–83): • From fabric A, cut 1 corner square, 5 small triangles, and 1 small square • From fabric B, cut 1 hexagon and 1 small triangle • From fabric C, cut 2 small triangles • From fabrics D and E, cut 1 small triangle each • From fabric F, cut 1 corner square, 1 right tapered rectangle, 2 full-length rectangles, 1 short rectangle, 2 small squares, and 5 small triangles • From fabric G, cut 2 narrow very small rectangles

  3. Template piecing With right sides together, sew a fabric C triangle to the fabric A corner square; press seam open. Repeat with a fabric C triangle and fabric F corner square. With right sides together, sew one fabric F triangle and one fabric A triangle to the fabric B hexagon to make the hexagon square; press seams open. With right sides together, sew the fabric D triangle to the fabric F right tapered rectangle; press seam open. With right sides together, sew a fabric F triangle to a fabric A triangle; press seam open. Repeat with two more sets of fabrics F and A triangles, a set of fabrics F and B triangles, and a set of fabrics A and E triangles to make half-square triangles.

  4. Make the block Sew the head and breast Arrange patches to make a robin. With right sides together, join the beak to the head; press seam open. With right sides together, join the fabrics A and E half-square triangle to a fabrics A and F half-square triangle, with the white and brown fabrics abutting; press seam open. Join the strip to the fabrics C and F corner square; press seam open. With right sides together, join the head and beak to the breast; press seam open. Make the body With right sides together, sew the fabrics B and F half-square triangle to a fabric F square, matching the background; press seam open. Join to the hexagon square to form the wing; press seam open. With right sides together, pin and sew a fabrics A and F half-square triangle to the short side of a fabric F short rectangle, matching the background; press seam open, then join to top of the wing. Right sides together, sew fabric A and fabric F squares to fabric A and F half-square triangle, matching the background and body; press seam open; then join to bottom of the wing. Complete the square With right sides together, pin and sew the wing to the head and breast patch; press seam open. Appliqué (see page 20) the fabric G narrow very small rectangles to a fabric F full-length rectangle as the legs, then sew the strip to the bottom edge of the bird. With right sides together, pin and sew the remaining fabric F full-length rectangle to the top edge. Press seam open.
