Before I ever consider buying fabric from JoAnne, I always like to go to the clearance section to see what I can find. I found this awesome Poly-something-or-the-other crinkle fabric for $4.50/yd. For this project, I prefer you use a type of fabric that flows well, and for hot summer days, something that is light and will keep you cool. I plan on making a more visual tutorial with real pictures to help make this simpler.

Before I ever consider buying fabric from JoAnne, I always like to go to the clearance section to see what I can find. I found this awesome Poly-something-or-the-other crinkle fabric for $4.50/yd. For this project, I prefer you use a type of fabric that flows well, and for hot summer days, something that is light and will keep you cool. I plan on making a more visual tutorial with real pictures to help make this simpler.

Instructions

1. Start by measuring your chest. NOT your bust, but do it so the measuring tape is just an inch or two inches below your armpits. Now double that number. And then cut two rectangles that each measure your chest x2 and the length you want your dress. My measurements came to be 32, so that x2 is 64. So I would cut 2 rectangles that measure 64 x length + .5 inch seam allowance. Now sew rectangles together by the sides. *Make sure right sides are facing together.

2. Now it's time to sew the elastic casing. Since the elastic used for this project measures .5/in, you want your casing to be just a couple or millimeters wider than the elastic, just so it's not too snug in the casing. Turn your "dress" inside out so sewing seams are exposed. At the top of the dress, fold fabric over about 1 & 1/2 inches and pin and sew. Remember to leave an opening in the dress for elastic insertion. This will be the casing for the elastic. Before we insert the elastic, cut the elastic to equal your chest measurements (minus about 2 inches) from earlier in the tutorial. Remember to leave roughly .5/in for seam allowance.

3. To insert elastic, simply guide it through the casing with a safety pin. Next, to secure the elastic, hand sew it overlapping each other, instead of having each end facing opposite, like you would sew a seam). And then sew up your opening with your preferred stitch.

4. The last couple of steps consists of simply sewing up the hem with any preferred stitch and adding a cute belt to distinguish and flatter your waist.
