I found a tutorial for a barret at marthastewart.com. I don't have printer so I created my own pattern. Turned out pretty cool I think.

You Will Need (1 thing)

  • Wool Fabric

Steps (5 steps, 60 minutes)

  1. 1

Measure your head. Divide the width through 6. That's how wide the bottom of the pattern should be. This pattern is made to fit my exceptionally large head. If your head measurement is smaller (and it definately will be), adjust the pattern accordingly.

    Cut out 6 pieces.

Make the hat band: Cut a strip of wool 5 cm wide, and as long as your head measurement plus seam alowance.

  2. 2

Put two pieces together, right sides facing and edges aligned. Using a sewing machine, sew these two pieces together along one long edge. Open the sewn piece, and align a third piece to a raw edge, right sides facing. Pin and sew as you did the first two pieces. This is half of the beret -- repeat this step with the remaining three pieces to make the second half.

Pin the two halves together, right sides facing and edges aligned.

Use a zigzag stitch along the raw seam allowances to finish and reinforce the seams.

  3. 3

To get the specific shape, turn the hat inside out. Fold each of the 6 pieces in half and topstitch about 1-2 cm from the side from top to 2 cm from the bottom.

  4. 4

Match the short sides of the strip together, right sides facing, and sew.

    9. Fold the band you have just created in half lengthwise, with the right sides on the outside of the fold, matching raw edges together. Press.

Match the raw edges of the hat band with the raw edge of the hat, with the band on the outside of the hat. Pin in place all around. Remove extension arm of sewing machine and stitch hat and hat band together. Finish seam with a zigzag stitch.

  5. 5

    Done!
