To make the left mitt: Using CCa, ch38. Row 1: 1htr1into 3rd ch from hook, 1htr into each ch to end, turn. (36sts) Fasten off CCa and join in CCb. Row 2: ch3, 1tr into each st to end, turn. Work the next 13 rows as Row 2, changing colour for each row to create stripe as follows. Row 3: CCc. Row 4: CCd. Row 5: CCe. Row 6: CCf. Row 7: CCg. Row 8: CCb. Row 9: MC. Row 10: CCh. Row 11: CCa. Row 12: CCd. Row 13: CCc. Row 14: CCe. Row 15: CCb. Work the next section of the mitt as rounds. Fasten off CCb and join in CCf. Round 16: ch3, 1tr into each st to end, sl st into top of ch3 at beg of round. Work the next two rounds as Round 16, changing colour for each round to create stripe as follows. Round 17: CCg. Round 18: CCh. Fasten off CCh and join in CCa. Round 19: ch2, 1htr into each st to end, sl st into top of ch2 at beg of round. Fasten off CCa and join in MC.
Top edging: Round 20: ch1, 1dc into each st to end, sl st into ch1 at beg of round. Do not fasten off yarn. Work next round working sl sts into back loops only. Round 21: *ch3, sl st into same st (picot made), sl st into next 3sts, rep from * to end. Fasten off yarn.
Buttonhole band: With RS facing you and using MC, work buttonhole band on opposite side from button band just worked. Join yarn to twelfth stripe from the left. Row 1: ch1, 1dc into same sp, 2dc into each stripe to end, turn. (23sts) Row 2: ch1, 1dc into first st, 1dc into next st, *ch2, miss 1st, 1dc into each of next 2sts, rep from * to end, turn. (7 buttonholes) Row 3: *miss 1st, sl st into next st **, 3d3 into ch2sp **, sl st into next 2sts, repeat from *, ending last repeat at **, miss 1st, sl st in last st. Fasten off yarn and weave in loose ends.
Thumb hole: With RS facing you and buttonhole band to the left, start work where the buttonhole band finished, into the thirteenth stripe. Join MC into thirteenth stripe. Round 1: ch1, 2dc into same place as ch1 just worked, continue working 2dc into each stripe up to where the rounds begin, next work back down the stripes until you have 16sts, miss the buttonhole band sts, working the first st firmly, work 2dc into the end of button band, sl st into first dc at beg of round. (18sts) Round 2: ch1, dc1 into each st to end, sl st into ch1 at beg of round. Fasten off yarn.
To make the right mitt: Work as given for left mitt until all 21 rows/rounds of mitt and top edging have been completed.
Buttonhole band: Lay mitt out so the rounds are on the left-hand side and the fold is to the bottom. Join MC to top right-hand corner and work buttonhole band as given for left mitt.
Button band: With RS facing you, join MC to twelfth stripe from left and work button band on opposite side from buttonhole band as given for left mitt.
Thumb hole Work to match left mitt.
Finishing Weave in loose ends and sew buttons onto button bands to match up with buttonholes.
