My sister made a purse for my birthday similar to this. She said she just visually deconstructed it and made her own pattern. This was my first attempt and it was pretty successful.

You Will Need (4 things)

  • Thread
  • Double Fold Bias Tape
  • 3 yd Muslin
  • 3 yd Heavy Fabric With A Pattern

Steps (4 steps, 30 minutes)

  1. 1

I started with drawing my own pattern. I used a Braum's paper sack for my pattern. I folded a large piece in half and sketched out the shape I wanted. After cutting out my pattern I cut out two pieces in the patterned fabric and two pieces in the muslin for the lining. I also measured how long the strap needed to be and cut one long rectangular piece.

To get to this step I layered to begin sewing. I started by placing the patterned pieces together with wrong side facing out. I then layer the two pieces of muslin on the outside of those. The muslin had its right side facing out. So the stack of fabric went like this: muslin, pattern, pattern, muslin. I then pinned the sides together and began sewing. I started at the top right hand corner and followed the U leaving the top open. Once sewn I pulled out the pins and turned the purse inside out. This would leave the patterned fabric facing out. I wanted to have a slight pleat along the top of the bag so I pinned two pleats on either side of the bag. Then I pinned the bias tape along the top exposed edge.

Sorry about the bad pic. Here the pinning is done. I then sewed along the tape securing it and the top of the bag in place. I then stopped and sewed the strap. I did this in typical fashion. I sewed along the bottom and long edge with the wrong side facing out then proceeded to turn it out. I ironed it flat and then pinned it to the inside of the bag making sure the edges were smooth. I then sewed the straps in by making a box with the stitching to give it strength.
