About

I was inspired by a cake made by Duff (Ace of Cakes) for Paula's Party. She asked for a blue velvet cake in the shape of a guitar (if memory serves me right) and she got it! Tomorrow (Christmas Eve) is my birthday, so I made this for myself with my favorite color: purple. It was really easy, and depending on what you have in your cabinet, shouldn't cost much at all. I ran into a few blips because I was using techniques I've never used before. But considering I'm a cookie person I think I did pretty well for my first homemade cake. And it tastes delicious!

You Will Need (11 things)

  • 2 cup Sugar
  • 2 tbsp stick Butter at room temperature
  • 2 Egg(s)
  • 2 tbsp Cocoa powder
  • ½ cup Food Coloring in color of your choice
  • 2 ½ cup cake Flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • ½ tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tbsp distilled white Vinegar

Steps (9 steps, 60 minutes)

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Gease 2 round cake pans. I use two 9 inch, but you can use whatever you like.

  2. 2

Gather all ingredients and supplies. I used 4 bowls and an extra for a garbage bowl. Can you tell I'm really into Food Network? Lolz.

  3. 3

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each one.

  4. 4

Mix cocoa powder and food color together and then add to sugar mixture; mix well.

  5. 5

So right now your batter should look like this.

  6. 6

Mix together flour and salt. Add flour mixture to the creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. I did it 1 cup flour mixture then 1/2 cup buttermilk, 1 1/2 cup flour mixture and the final 1/2 cup buttermilk.

Now the batter should look like this.

  7. 7

    Blend in vanilla.

In a small bowl, combine baking soda and vinegar and add to mixture.

  8. 8

Seperate batter into greased cake pans and bake 25-30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

  9. 9

Let cool and then ice and you're done! I used 1 1/2 cans vanilla icing from the store, but you can make your own or buy something different.
