Pretty Cute Upcycled Grandma's Dress

Never have to be sad again about a retro thrift shop dress that isn't all perfect.

About

You know these times when you go to thrift shop and there's a dress that's just perfect... except the length, and the waist, and well... things. But other than that -- it's perfect.

I found this dress that was the right color and had these beautiful sleeves but it needed some work to make it realy truly mine. Since the "grandma style" clothes are often wrong all in the same way maybe you can use some ideas from my project to make your almost perfect purchases better too.

You Will Need (4 things)

  • 1 Thrifted Dress
  • Sewing Machine
  • Sewing Supplies
  • Fabric

Steps (6 steps, 60 minutes)

  1. 1

Buy a dress. Don't spend too much.

  2. 2

Cut the dress in halves at the waist.
Find a piece of fabric that some way matches your dress.
Measure your waist and make a middle part for the dress according to that measure.
Attach with pins, make some wrinkles to the original dress and sew the new middle part.
This will also make the dress a bit longer.

  3. 3

Make a wider neckline just by cutting it. My dress had a zipper so I kept the back as it was.

  4. 4

Seam the edges and using pins find one or two or three places to crimp the neckline.

  5. 5

Three crimps on the neckline looking good.

  6. 6

    That's it.
