I wanted to make some cute geta to match my pink gingham yukata and pop print hanhaba obi this summer. I worked off a pair of already existing geta from ebay to make this Yamamoto Yumi inspired pair! I had a little cinnamonroll print fabric left over from previous projects to use for the hanao straps.

First, remove the hanao straps from the geta soles. If possible, do this without cutting the strings and simply untie them instread. Hanao are made to be interchangeable so this shouldn't be too hard!
cover any parts you don't want to paint. I just covered the rubber soles of my geta.
paint the base in a base colour. you may wish to prime first. I used a satin white paint. alternatively, you may want to skip this step and let the wood underneath be your base colour!
once the base coat is dry, use a penny to trace circle shapes on to your masking tape, carefully cut them out and stick them in a polkadot pattern on the geta.
spray them with your other colour. I used a gloss pink, as I thought a different finish to the base coat would look attractive.
remove all the masking tape once this is dry.
Take apart one of the hanao straps. Only take apart one for now as this will help you if you need to look at the other to see how they go back together. if you want to use the original hanao skip to step 13.
copy the fabric parts of the hanao and cut enough for 2. if the seam allowance is too small for you, you may want to enlarge it.
sew together the long sides of the main strap covering, turn and slip onto the base.
sew over the ends to prevent slipping.
sew together the long sides of the small strap, turn and slip on to the base.
sew the ends over the main strap and form into the complete hanao. repeat for both.
reattach the hanao by tying securely on to the soles.
