as a birthday present i got a voucher for a plant dying course from my father. it takes part in an open air museum with lots of old houses and stuff from 17th till 20th century. they also have a textile/crafting house. today the topic was the colour yellow, so we started collecting plants for the dye. the course leader explained which shades of yellow which plant will become and i decided to try it with basswood leaves. my father chose elder leaves. we made a boiling with the leaves and dipped in wool and silk. after dying with just the basswood leaves i spilled in some iron water and changed the colour to a more greenish yellow, one skein i dyed complete with the new colour, the other one i twisted and created a melange. before dying the wool and silk the lady sauced it with a mixture of different acids, but after dying there´s no fixing needed. in august the topic is the colour red, i´m really looking forward to it.
