Description

I've had the idea to make a cushion shaped like a pincushion for my craft room for ages and finally decided to make two while brainstorming an idea for my crafty friend's birthday!

Instructions

  1. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 234630 img 1374

Cut a circle template from paper, slightly larger than you'd like your final cushion to be and cut it out.

  2. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 234732 img 1376

Cut out two circles from the red fabric using your template.

  3. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 234752 img 1378

Place the two circles on top of each other and pin around the outer edge.

  4. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 234814 img 1379

Sew around the outline of your circles, leaving a small opening at the top.

  5. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 234840 img 1380

Sew over your line again with a zigzag stitch to prevent fraying.

  6. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 234913 img 1381

Trim off extra fabric from around the edge with fabric scissors.

  7. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 234935 img 1382

Make a paper template for the green sprout at the top of the pin cushion.

  8. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235008 img 1383

Use your template to cut two sprout shaped from green felt.

  9. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235033 img 1385

Cut out two small pepper shaped pieces from the red fabric and pin around the edges.

  10. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235342 img 1387

    Stitch around the pepper.

  11. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235142 img 1388

Turn the cushion inside out and stuff. Stitch the opening of the tomato closed and stitch the sprout to the top of the tomato using green embroidery thread.

  12. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235408 img 1390

Stitch green lines down the tomato from just under the sprout to the bottom, ending in the middle.

  13. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235458 img 1391

Bring the line back up from the bottom, up the other side and back underneath the sprout.

  14. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235536 img 1394

Knot off and leave a long tail coming at the top of the sprout.

  15. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235606 img 1393

Repeat on the reverse side and then stitch one final line down the middle of the cushion. Pull your lines tight to give the cushion a tomato shape.

  16. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235648 img 1395

Pleat the three tails into a braid and cut a leaf shape from green felt. Cut a hole in the middle of the leaf an slip it onto the braid.

  17. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235723 img 1396

Stitch the pepper closed, placing the braid inside the pepper and stitching in place.

  18. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235801 img 1522

Using silver thread, stitch some small buttons around your cushion to look like pin heads.

  19. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235845 img 1523

Stitch a small line under each pin and knot off.

  20. Small 112040 2f2015 11 15 235857 img 1597

    You're all done!
