I've had the idea to make a cushion shaped like a pincushion for my craft room for ages and finally decided to make two while brainstorming an idea for my crafty friend's birthday!

You Will Need (13 things)

  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Red Fabric
  • Pins
  • Sewing Machine
  • Thread
  • Paper for templates
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Green Felt
  • Green Embroidery Thread
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Small Buttons
  • Silver Thread

Steps (20 steps, 90 minutes)

  1. 1

Cut a circle template from paper, slightly larger than you'd like your final cushion to be and cut it out.

  2. 2

Cut out two circles from the red fabric using your template.

  3. 3

Place the two circles on top of each other and pin around the outer edge.

  4. 4

Sew around the outline of your circles, leaving a small opening at the top.

  5. 5

Sew over your line again with a zigzag stitch to prevent fraying.

  6. 6

Trim off extra fabric from around the edge with fabric scissors.

  7. 7

Make a paper template for the green sprout at the top of the pin cushion.

  8. 8

Use your template to cut two sprout shaped from green felt.

  9. 9

Cut out two small pepper shaped pieces from the red fabric and pin around the edges.

  10. 10

    Stitch around the pepper.

  11. 11

Turn the cushion inside out and stuff. Stitch the opening of the tomato closed and stitch the sprout to the top of the tomato using green embroidery thread.

  12. 12

Stitch green lines down the tomato from just under the sprout to the bottom, ending in the middle.

  13. 13

Bring the line back up from the bottom, up the other side and back underneath the sprout.

  14. 14

Knot off and leave a long tail coming at the top of the sprout.

  15. 15

Repeat on the reverse side and then stitch one final line down the middle of the cushion. Pull your lines tight to give the cushion a tomato shape.

  16. 16

Pleat the three tails into a braid and cut a leaf shape from green felt. Cut a hole in the middle of the leaf an slip it onto the braid.

  17. 17

Stitch the pepper closed, placing the braid inside the pepper and stitching in place.

  18. 18

Using silver thread, stitch some small buttons around your cushion to look like pin heads.

  19. 19

Stitch a small line under each pin and knot off.

  20. 20

    You're all done!
