Versatile and adaptable to any situation, once you start using hair sticks you'll never need a hair tie again. These hair accessories can be made for nearly nothing and can be decorated for casual or formal occasions.

Decide which dowel width is best for you. I have thick, coarse hair and tend to use 1 stick instead of 2 so I use dowels that are 3/8 inch wide. If you have finer hair or use 2 sticks, dowels that are 1/4 inch wide are probably a little bit better.
Use any old pencil sharpener and sharpen one end of the dowel.
Use a sanding block to smooth out the sharpened end.
Be sure to round the tip of the dowel down pretty far. You don't want to poke and scrape yourself every time you do your hair.
Decide how long you want your stick and measure it out from the tip of the sharpened end. I used to use 8 in sticks when my hair was down to my tailbone. Now that I've cut my hair I feel like 7 inches would be plenty. I'd say start long and then cut it down if you need it shorter.
Cut the dowel along the line you marked. Handsaw is the most ideal tool but you could try to use gardening shears or something along the lines of that.
Sand down any rough edges.
Use a wood conditioner and rub it all over the dowel to make is smooth and glossy. You could also use coconut oil, a stain, or the waxy side of wax paper.
The stick is essentially done at this point. You can choose to leave the stick as is, or decorate it.
For decorations you can use strong adhesives or nails to glue on pendants, flowers, charms, pretty much anything you can fit on the end of a stick. Wrapping the sticks with embroidery thread, wire, or yarn is a good option as well. For a topper that dangles, you can screw in an eye pin and attach beads, pendants or do what I did and attach a guitar pick. The possibilities are endless.
