Gather your materials! Here I have cut out several different styles of scrapbook paper to the width of the number of sticks I am using. (Typically three or four sticks.)
I use these popsicle sticks because of the thickness and price. The wood-like paper that comes in sheets is like an 8 by 11 sheet that costs the same amount as 100 sticks! Craziness! I prefer to be innovative and find better means for my budget.
Take the number of sticks that achieve your desired width, and make sure they fit your paper, and fold over the sticks to create a crease.
Now paint on a layer of decoupage in front of that crease. (This makes it less sticky and prevents you from wasting decoupage because it can dry before you lay your sticks and fold it shut).
After you have put down a layer decoupage, lay your sticks down and add more decoupage to the sides of the sticks to help them stay together.
Now paint another layer over the top to secure your sticks, being sure the decoupage goes into the cracks.
Now fold the other half of the paper strip over your exposed sticks. There will be about an inch of paper left over. (See picture 9)
Fold that extra paper over the top and secure in place. Then paint over the top of the extra piece to make sure it is not going anywhere!
(foldin the extra flap over)
I was adding quotes that I had already written and printed out so I laid those pieces on and painted another layer of decoupage.
If you are not adding anymore, you can do a layer of decoupage just to make the bookmark glossy.
Done! I added some colored wire that I shaped and then hot-glued on to the back. Other bookmarks I have done are wrapped in colorful metallic decorative thread. Anything that strikes your fancy, add it! But if you want it to actually fit in a book, make sure your add-ons are flat. HAVE FUN!
